10 Retro-Inspired Team Fitness Challenges

Retro video games are a fun, nostalgic theme for workplace wellness challenges. Everyone remembers eating dots in a maze or stacking falling blocks – and a good story makes a challenge easier to explain and more fun to join. Here are ten retro-inspired team fitness challenges that fit YuMuuv's three goal types: consistency (days the daily goal is met), total (an individual target) and collective (one shared team goal).

1. Daily Dot Challenge (inspired by Pac-Man)

Goal type: consistency.
Every day someone hits their activity target, they "eat a dot". Frame it as "collect 20 dots in 30 days" – and keep the ghosts of inactivity away.

2. Fit Stack Challenge (inspired by Tetris)

Goal type: total.
Every workout is a block falling into place. Each 10% of a personal goal "clears a line" – reach 100% and you've stacked a perfect game.

3. Level-Up Challenge (inspired by Super Mario Bros.)

Goal type: consistency.
Each successful day clears a level, for example "5,000 steps on 20 of 30 days to reach the castle". Morning messages like "World 5-2: time to power up!" keep the story going.

4. Sprint Challenge (inspired by Sonic the Hedgehog)

Goal type: total.
Race to a personal distance target – for example 100 km in a month – with every kilometre adding "rings". Add a weekend speed bonus to keep momentum.

5. Tower Climb Challenge (inspired by Donkey Kong)

Goal type: collective.
The whole team climbs the tower together: every step, stair or active minute lifts the group higher. Milestones at 25%, 50% and 100% make progress visible.

6. Defend the Base Challenge (inspired by Space Invaders)

Goal type: collective.
Activity is your laser cannon. "Log 1,000 active minutes as a team this month to repel the invasion." Post progress updates like "200 invaders down – keep moving!"

7. Team Quest Challenge (inspired by The Legend of Zelda)

Goal type: collective.
The team sets out on a quest – for example 500 miles together – collecting a new "item" at each milestone until the final piece of the treasure is found.

8. Catch-Them-All Challenge (inspired by Pokémon)

Goal type: consistency.
Every day someone hits the target, they "catch" a new creature for their collection. Small rewards at 5, 10 and 20 days work like gym badges.

9. Leapfrog Challenge (inspired by Frogger)

Goal type: consistency.
Each active day moves your frog one lane closer to home – "cross 15 lanes in 30 days". Missed a day? Just hop forward again tomorrow.

10. Tournament Challenge (inspired by Street Fighter)

Goal type: total.
Train for the championship: for example 500 active minutes in four weeks, with "opponents" defeated at 25%, 50% and 100% of the goal.

Tips for Running a Retro Challenge

  • Choose the right goal type: consistency for habits, total for personal ambition, collective for team spirit – see YuMuuv challenge types explained.
  • Use your own retro-style visuals: pixel-art graphics, progress bars and "level" markers work great. Create your own designs rather than using official game characters or logos.
  • Tell the story: short, playful updates via announcements and the challenge chat keep people engaged.
  • Keep it inclusive: set targets everyone can reach, and use team totals so every contribution counts.
  • Celebrate the "final boss": mark the end with recognition or a small prize – see the rewards guide.
