Six things to check in any step challenge app
Steps should sync from the phone or wearable people already have. Every extra step at sign-up costs participants.
Teams of different sizes should be ranked on average per person, not totals.
Some people are driven by their own goal, others by their team. You want both.
HR needs sign-ups, participation and exportable results for leadership.
For larger or international companies, check SOC 2, GDPR and app languages.
Per employee, per participant, per week or per year can change the final bill a lot.

Step challenge app FAQ
How we compared: every fact in this guide comes from the vendor’s own website, G2, Capterra or the App Store, checked on 9 October 2026. Where a vendor does not publish something, we say so.
What is the best step challenge app for work?
It depends on size and goals. For a company-wide challenge with personal and team leaderboards, phone-only tracking and support to launch, YuMuuv, Vantage Fit and Pacer for Teams are strong options. Small teams on a budget often choose ChallengeRunner or Stridekick.
Is there a free step challenge app for work?
Stridekick and ChallengeRunner both offer free plans for up to 10 people and 7 days. Company-wide challenges with admin and reporting are paid on every platform we reviewed.
Can employees join without a fitness tracker?
With most apps on this list, yes. YuMuuv, Pacer, Stridekick and Wellbeing+ count steps on the phone.
What happened to MoveSpring and Walker Tracker?
MoveSpring was acquired by Reward Gateway in 2023 and is now Wellbeing+. Walker Tracker was acquired by Terryberry in 2022 and its app is now Terryberry Be Well.
Can you run a step challenge on Strava?
Not really. Strava group challenges cover activities like runs and rides, but steps are not one of the challenge types, and there is no HR admin or reporting.
How long should a company step challenge last?
Four weeks is a common choice: long enough to build a habit, short enough to keep the energy up.
