Introducing Labworks
Labworks is a leading software company that provides Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) to clients across the United States and internationally. With a history dating back to 1986, Labworks was acquired by its current co-owners around nine years ago and has grown steadily ever since. With a strong technical team and a solid product offering, Labworks is driven by innovation and employee engagement — values that led them to explore YuMuuv as a wellness solution.
Starting the Wellness Journey
Alisha Blackmore, who handles administration and accounting at Labworks, along with colleague Bryson Barrow, spearheaded the implementation of YuMuuv within the company. Although still early in their journey — officially launching after a 30-day trial in February 2025 — their initial experience with the platform has been overwhelmingly positive.
YuMuuv came recommended through a network referral, and after comparing several wellness platforms, Labworks decided that YuMuuv’s user-friendly interface and functionality were the right fit for their team.
First Challenge: Active Minutes
Labworks kicked things off with an Active Minutes Challenge, which proved to be a fun and inclusive way to get employees moving. Although there were some small learning curves — particularly for those using manual entry or not wearing fitness devices — the team adapted quickly. The result? A successful start that sparked engagement and friendly office competition.
“Everyone all around was satisfied with the active minutes challenge.” – Alisha Blackmore
Experimenting with Calorie Burn
For their second challenge, Labworks tried a Calorie Burn Challenge, which prompted valuable discussions around fairness and data accuracy. Team members noticed that individuals with larger body mass were naturally burning more passive calories, leading to a feeling of imbalance in the challenge results.
YuMuuv’s team offered insights into how calorie burn calculations work and shared potential solutions — like using an activity index based on each person’s basal metabolic rate. The Labworks team also requested the ability to focus specifically on active calorie data, a feature YuMuuv is actively considering as part of future updates.
“The option for active calorie burn would be awesome … to exclude passive.” – Alisha Blackmore
Positive Outcomes and Next Steps
Despite differences in devices and tracking preferences, Labworks employees found YuMuuv easy to use and fun to engage with. The in-app chat feature allowed people to share photos and create a sense of community, and even sparked conversations in the office about wellness progress.
“It definitely creates conversation around the office and I think it’s been fun for people to see.” – Bryson Barrow
Looking ahead, the Labworks team is eager to try new challenge formats — including wellness point systems that combine steps, sleep, yoga, and other activities to level the playing field for all users, regardless of device.
