How does YuMuuv calculate Exercise Minutes?
How exercise minutes are tracked depends on the device or app being used. Here's a more detailed explanation:
-
Apple Health (with Apple Watch): Exercise minutes come directly from your Apple Watch's exercise minutes. If you also have tracked workouts (either with Apple Watch Workout app or with a third-party app), YuMuuv will use whichever value is higher — the Apple Watch exercise time or the total workout duration.
-
Apple Health (without Apple Watch): Exercise minutes are automatically calculated from the total duration of tracked workouts that sync to Apple Health. This means if you use a third-party app (e.g., Polar Beat, Strava) that records workouts to Apple Health, those workout minutes will count as your exercise minutes in YuMuuv. If no workouts are tracked, you would need to add your minutes manually in YuMuuv (if the challenge organizer has allowed it).
-
Fitbit / Garmin / Polar / Suunto: For these devices, minutes are only calculated from tracked workouts. This means you need to actively start and end an activity on your device (e.g., track a workout like walking, running, gym session, etc.). Background activity (like daily steps) usually does not count — only activities that are recorded as workouts will generate exercise minutes.
-
Google Fit: Google Fit uses "Move Minutes." These are minutes of activity where your movement reaches a certain intensity (for example, brisk walking or more active movement). Google Fit can calculate these automatically based on your activity, but it works best when activities are actively tracked. YuMuuv then uses these Move Minutes as your exercise minutes.
-
Health Connect (Android): Health Connect does not provide native exercise minutes (like Apple Watch's exercise minutes or Google Fit's Move Minutes). Instead, exercise minutes are calculated from the total duration of tracked workouts that are synced to Health Connect. This means you need to actively record workouts using an app that writes to Health Connect (e.g., Samsung Health, Fitbit, a third-party fitness app). Background activity like daily steps does not count — only recorded workout sessions contribute to exercise minutes.
To ensure your minutes are counted correctly, it's important to track (start and end) your activity as a workout or exercise session on your device or app. Regular background steps alone are usually not enough.
